About This Lodge

Finch Hattons offers a refined, heritage-inspired safari experience that mirrors the elegance of the early twentieth-century expeditions. The camp is defined by its open-air design and its position amidst natural freshwater springs, which attract a steady flow of wildlife. This setting creates a quiet and sophisticated atmosphere where the focus remains on the surrounding ecosystem.

The experience is grounded in a tradition of understated luxury, providing a calm space for guests to reconnect with nature. It combines a sense of history with modern comfort, making it a distinct choice for those who appreciate a well-paced and thoughtful journey through the African wilderness. The camp serves as a tranquil base for exploring the volcanic landscapes and diverse habitats of Tsavo West.

Location & Setting

The camp is situated in the southwestern part of Tsavo West National Park, surrounded by a series of spring-fed pools. This area is characterized by lush green vegetation that contrasts with the surrounding red volcanic soil and ancient lava flows. The geography is dominated by views of the Chyulu Hills and, on clear days, the distant peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Access is primarily through the camp’s private airstrip, which is a short drive from the main lodge area. Its location within a concentrated wildlife zone ensures that the natural environment is always present, with the sound of running water and bird calls providing a constant sensory backdrop to the stay.

Accommodation

There are 17 luxury tents, including family suites, all raised on wooden decks to offer views of the surrounding springs and forest. The design uses canvas, stone, and copper finishes to create a space that feels both sturdy and light. Each tent is spacious, featuring large windows that allow for natural ventilation and a private veranda for quiet observation.

The interiors are furnished with a focus on tactile comfort, using natural fabrics and warm tones. The sensory experience is enhanced by the sound of hippos in the nearby pools and the gentle rustle of the trees, ensuring guests feel fully immersed in the quiet rhythm of the bush from the privacy of their rooms.

Facilities & Experiences

The heart of the camp is the main pavilion, which houses a library, a lounge, and a dining area overlooking the water. A signature feature is the star-gazing terrace, where guests can observe the clear night sky in a peaceful setting. The camp also includes a wellness spa and a dedicated yoga deck, providing spaces for physical and mental relaxation.

Dining is an intimate affair, often taking place outdoors to maintain a connection with the landscape. The service is attentive but discreet, fostering a relaxed environment. A shaded swimming pool offers a cool retreat during the warmer parts of the day, while the evening fire pit serves as a gathering point for sharing stories.
