About This Lodge

Turaco Treetops Lodge is a semi-luxe retreat located at the edge of Kibale Forest National Park, a region famous for having the highest density of primates in Africa. The lodge is designed to blend into the canopy, offering a sense of living among the trees without compromising on modern comforts. The architecture uses clean lines and open spaces to bring the forest indoors.

It serves as a calm base for those coming to track chimpanzees or explore the surrounding crater lakes. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, focusing on the sounds of the jungle and the frequent visits from Black and White Colobus monkeys. It is a place where the boundary between the cultivated gardens and the wild forest feels thin and natural.

Location & Setting

The lodge sits on a lush property right at the border of the national park in Western Uganda. This position provides guests with immediate access to the forest trails while maintaining a wide-open view of the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains on clear days. The surrounding landscape is a mix of dense rainforest and traditional Ugandan farmland, offering a look into the rural life of the Bigodi region.

The air here is cool and crisp, often filled with the calls of the Great Blue Turaco, the bird that gives the lodge its name. Being outside the park gates allows for a quieter experience, away from the main transit routes, yet close enough to reach the chimpanzee briefing point within fifteen minutes.

Accommodation

The rooms are built as individual cottages or “treehouses,” elevated to capture the best views of the forest canopy. Each unit features large windows and private balconies designed for bird watching or simply watching the mist rise off the trees in the morning. The interiors are functional and spacious, using local wood and stone to create a warm feel.

The beds are positioned to face the forest, ensuring that the first thing you see at sunrise is the greenery of Kibale. The bathrooms are modern and simple, with large showers that use gravity-fed water systems. There is a clear focus on privacy, with each cottage spaced out to ensure guests feel like they have their own corner of the jungle.

Facilities & Experiences

The main lodge area is a large, thatched structure that houses the restaurant, bar, and a cozy lounge with a fireplace. The fireplace is the heart of the lodge during the cool evenings, where guests share stories of their chimpanzee encounters. A highlight of the property is the wooden deck and the swimming pool, which offers a rare chance to swim while looking directly into the rainforest.

The dining experience focuses on fresh, local ingredients, with a mix of international and Ugandan flavors. Service is personal and friendly, reflecting the warmth of the local community. The lodge layout encourages walking and exploration, with well-maintained paths that wind through the indigenous trees and flower gardens.

Our Sustainability & Community Impact

The lodge maintains a dedicated tree nursery where they grow indigenous species to actively reforest the perimeter of the property. This creates a natural corridor for monkeys moving between the park and the community lands. By choosing to source all honey and coffee from small-scale farmers in the immediate village, the lodge ensures that the presence of tourism directly supports the preservation of the forest by making it more valuable to the neighbors than traditional clearing.
