About This Lodge

Masai Mara Sopa Lodge is one of the first lodges built in the reserve, holding a grounded and classic position on the slopes of the Oloolaimutia Hills. Its identity is shaped by its traditional architecture, featuring conical roofs that mirror the design of a traditional Maasai village. The atmosphere is steady and welcoming, offering a spacious and reliable base for those exploring the eastern reaches of the Masai Mara.

The lodge provides a sense of scale and openness, making it suitable for large groups and families who value a structured and comfortable environment. It emphasizes a relaxed pace, where the experience is centered on the expansive views of the surrounding hills and the accessibility to the park’s diverse wildlife zones. This property serves as a practical and value-focused entry point into the safari circuit, maintaining a quiet confidence in its service and location.

Location & Setting

The lodge is situated high on the slopes of a hill near the Oloolaimutia Gate in the eastern section of the Masai Mara National Reserve. This elevated position provides a wide perspective over the rolling grasslands and acacia-spotted plains below.

The geography here is defined by rocky outcrops and dense thickets, creating a distinct environmental backdrop compared to the open savannahs of the central Mara. Access is straightforward by road from Nairobi, approximately a five to six-hour drive, or via a scheduled flight to the nearby Keekorok airstrip followed by a short transfer.

Accommodation

The lodge features 99 spacious rooms housed in traditional round cottages, each with two queen-sized beds and en suite bathrooms. The design prioritizes space and light, using warm wood tones and neutral finishes to create a calm retreat after a day on the plains.

Every room has a private veranda that looks out toward the hills or the landscaped gardens, allowing for quiet moments of reflection. The sensory experience is grounded in the soft hilltop breeze and the expansive views, ensuring guests feel a sense of privacy and comfort within the larger lodge structure.

Facilities & Experiences

Life at the lodge revolves around the large central lounge and dining area, which features high ceilings and traditional decor. The dining experience is communal and varied, catering to different dietary needs with a steady and professional service style.

A large swimming pool is located at the heart of the property, offering a cool area for midday relaxation while observing the birdlife in the trees. In the evenings, the bar and fire pit area becomes a gathering point for sharing stories of the day’s sightings, fostering a friendly and unhurried atmosphere.
